Black Hills National Forest
The name "Black Hills" comes from the Lakota words Paha Sapa, which mean "hills that are black." Seen from a distance, these pine-covered hills, rising several thousand feet above the surrounding prairie, appear black. Call (605) 673-9200 for more information.

Crook County Museum and Art Gallery
Crook County Museum and Art Gallery is on the lower level of the courthouse at 309 Cleveland St. The gallery contains more than 20,000 items from the Old West, including a re-creation of the original county courtroom. Photographs and legal papers of the Sundance Kid, who was incarcerated in the county jail for 18 months, also are displayed. Works by local artists are exhibited. Devils Tower
Devils Tower, the first national monument. Devils Tower was featured in the movie, "Close Encounters of The Third Kind." President Theodore Roosevelt established Devils Tower National Monument on September 24, 1906. The spectacular rock formation known as Devils Tower and the surrounding countryside, home to a myriad of plant and animal life, attract visitors from around the world. Climbers test their skills on vertical rock walls. Visitors delight in the beauty of the area and enjoy the activites offered at the monument. Little Bighorn National Monument
This area memorializes one of the last armed efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their way of life. Here in 1876, 263 soldiers and attached personnel of the U.S. Army, including Lt.
