Rawlins was and is a railroad town. In 1868 the Union Pacific came through and Rawlins became an important center of commerce. A number of outlaws made a stop in the area. Cheyenne Frontier Days
Wyoming's largest and most famous event takes place the last full week of July and continues on for 10 exciting days. The fairgrounds are typically packed full of people waiting to catch a glimpse of the world's largest outdoor rodeo. Call 307-778-7222 for more information.
Frontier Prison
Located at 5th and Walnut Streets, this was an operational state prison from 1901 to 1981. The impressive stonework exterior gives it the appearance of a medieval castle. Inside, there are several gruesome testaments to capitol punishment including a gallows designed for the victim to hang himself. Call 307-324-4422 for more information.
Martin's Cove
Situated along the Mormon Trail, Martin's Cove is the sight of one of the greatest pioneer disasters in history. 175 people, mainly elderly and children, lost their lives on this tragic trek from Iowa City to Salt Lake in 1856 due to encroaching winter conditions and poor transportation mechanisms. Survivors where finally found by a search party huddled in the protected Martin's Cove.
Saratoga Natural Hot Springs
Located on the east end of Walnut Ave. in Saratoga is Hobo Pool, where a sandy bottom pool is fed by the 117-128 degree water of Saratoga Hot Springs. It's open 24 hours a day and there's no charge. Visitors will find heated changing rooms with showers.
